This custom Arabic typeface was designed as part of the rebranding of the Dar Al Hekma University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. During the design process of the brand identity guidelines of the university, it was challenging to find the right appropriate calligraphic typeface that fits the requirement of the design. A decision was made then to create a custom arabic font that is designed with the required characteristics: a traditional calligraphic style that matches the existing handmade calligraphy of the university name present in the existing logo of the school. The calligraphy was manually created inspired by the thuluth style and was the basis for the typeface design which was created in two weights, regular and bold. Opentype features in the font enriched its usage possibilities and many ligatures were created to enhance the calligraphic spirit of the font. The font is regularly used across all communication material for the university and its various departments, both in print and media context.
