Arabictypography.com is one of the leading online portals for Arabic Typography and Design, bringing inspirations and trends from and to the Arab world. It is founded and maintained by the Netherlands-based design studio Tarek Atrissi Design in collaboration with design critic Hala Abdel Malak.
The website aims at creating an educational, inspirational and experimental online communication platform for designers in the Arab world. Despite being typographically driven at its core, it also covers a vast range of creative disciplines - graphic design, calligraphy and lettering; branding and visual identities; new media and TV graphics; popular and vernacular Arabic design; visual communication; among other design disciplines. Arabictypography.com offers an in-depth look at modern design that reflects trends, innovation and aesthetics in the Arab world today.
Introduced initially in the year 2000 by Tarek Atrissi, Arabictypography.com originally aimed to create an exciting Arabic Typographic presence on the web. It coincided well with a time where interactive Flash websites were rising all over the internet, and when it was impossible to find even one single decently designed Arabic website, let alone one that took full advantage of the beauty of the Arabic script in New Media context. Arabictypography.com brought a change: the website achieved back then its goals in creating a solid typographic online example, and in bringing the emerging Arabic typography from the Arab world to a wider international audience. Most importantly, it encouraged the further development of many similar initiatives on the web, such as blogs and informative online platforms dedicated to Arabic design and Typography.
Officially re-launched in 2011, Arabictypography.com is a manifestation of more contemporary areas such as Design and Social Change, moving beyond the traditional disciplines to design between the lines and its implication and resonance in society. Today, the website has been re-designed and restructured to better serve the needs of a rapidly growing global Arab design community, by creating a portal that supports advocating better awareness for design in the Arab World, and the first real platform for design criticism in the region.
